Some Confidence Is Lacking In AptarGroup, Inc.'s (NYSE:ATR) P/E

AptarGroup, Inc.(NYSE:ATR)のP / Eには自信が欠けています。

Simply Wall St ·  07/16 09:25

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 30.4x AptarGroup, Inc. (NYSE:ATR) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, AptarGroup has been doing quite well of late. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is AptarGroup's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as AptarGroup's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 34%. EPS has also lifted 26% in aggregate from three years ago, mostly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 7.6% each year over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

With this information, we find it concerning that AptarGroup is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Key Takeaway

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of AptarGroup's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

Having said that, be aware AptarGroup is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
