No-one enjoys it when they lose money on a stock. But no-one can make money on every call, especially in a declining market. The Avicopter Plc (SHSE:600038) is down 25% over three years, but the total shareholder return is -23% once you include the dividend. And that total return actually beats the market decline of 27%.

It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the three years that the share price fell, Avicopter's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 18% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 9% compound annual share price fall. So, despite the prior disappointment, shareholders must have some confidence the situation will improve, longer term. With a P/E ratio of 48.76, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Avicopter shareholders can take comfort that , including dividends, their trailing twelve month loss of 3.2% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 17%. Given the total loss of 0.8% per year over five years, it seems returns have deteriorated in the last twelve months. While some investors do well specializing in buying companies that are struggling (but nonetheless undervalued), don't forget that Buffett said that 'turnarounds seldom turn'. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
