Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) and Bridgestone Corporation have expanded their planned tire replacement operation using tire wear prediction technology to include large aircraft, starting with JAL's operation of the Airbus A350-900 aircraft from May 2024.

Aircraft tires support takeoffs and landings in harsh conditions, including heavy loads, high speeds, and a wide temperature range from high to low, with safety and security as the top priority. Tire replacement is necessary after several hundreds of takeoffs and landings due to wear and tear, but the rate of wear and tear differs according to the environment and usage of aircraft and airports. Therefore, it had been an unplanned operation, leading to sudden tire replacements or concentration of replacement timings. Therefore, from May 2020, J-AIR Corporation began a planned tire replacement operation for regional aircraft operated by JAL, by combining JAL's flight data and knowledge about aircraft with Bridgestone's wear prediction technology and knowledge about tires to accurately predict the timing of tire replacements. Over the course of about four years of operation, we have achieved efficient tire replacement and inventory leveling and reduction of tires and wheels. It also contributes to reducing CO2 emissions during production and use processes linked to them. Furthermore, as a result of the operational planning of tire replacement, we have been able to reduce unscheduled overtime for maintenance personnel, contribute to working reform that expands preventive maintenance, and improve the quality of maintenance work.

This time, based on the knowledge accumulated by both companies so far, the tire wear prediction technology and utilization have been further evolved, and the high-precision planned tire replacement operation has been expanded from regional aircraft to large aircraft.
JAL and Bridgestone will continue to collaborate and contribute to the development of the aviation industry through the creation of new value.

This initiative, which may seem simple but is actually a very difficult challenge, is the most prominent example of DX cases at our company, and we are grateful for Bridgestone's knowledge and use of digital technology to contribute greatly to improving and streamlining workplace environments and ensuring safety and security.
We will continue to further develop collaboration between the two companies and create new value to contribute to the development of aviation technology and society.
