[Nikkei Stock Average and TOPIX (Table)]

Nikkei average: 40329.60; -768.09. TOPIX: 2889.63; -25.58. In the afternoon, the Nikkei average started with a slightly narrower decline than the morning's closing price of 40277.86 yen, at 40329.60 yen, down 768.09 yen from the previous day. During the lunchtime, the Nikkei 225 futures traded within the range of 40260 yen to 40350 yen. The USD/JPY exchange rate remained high at around 156.30-40 yen, up about 70 sen from around 9 a.m. Asian markets were mixed, with the Shanghai Composite Index falling about 0.3% in unstable movements, while the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index rose about 0.1% in movements sandwiched around the previous day's close.

In the afternoon, a slight buying trend dominated the Tokyo market compared to before. The stabilization of the foreign exchange market, which had been showing a trend of a strong yen and weak dollar, and the fact that the Dow Jones futures market remained firm during the extended hours trading, have brought a sense of security to the Tokyo market. On the other hand, there are many cautious factors such as the US-China semiconductor regulations and the US presidential election, so active buying seems to be limited.
