Recently, the international environmental organization Greenpeace (Greenpeace) released the “Green Cloud 2024” report to evaluate the renewable energy and carbon neutrality performance of 25 Internet cloud service and data center companies in China. With outstanding progress in renewable energy use, information disclosure, environmental governance, and carbon neutrality actions, GDS ranked first in the list of data center companies for the second year in a row.

Based on principles such as industry leadership, market competitiveness, and public influence, “Green Cloud 2024” comprehensively assesses corporate climate performance from the four dimensions of information disclosure and environmental governance, carbon neutrality goals and actions, renewable energy goals and actions, and influence, providing a reference for the entire industry to move towards a lower carbon and sustainable development model.

In this year's selection, a total of 25 mainstream Internet cloud service companies and data center companies were selected for evaluation. The selected cloud service companies accounted for more than 52% of China's public cloud IaaS market share in the first half of 2023, and the selected data center companies accounted for more than 60% of the market share in 2022, representing the current exemplary strength of the carbon neutrality performance of Chinese Internet technology companies.

As the only company that uses more than 30% of renewable energy, and with Tencent and ByteDance, it is the only 8 companies that have set a target of 100% renewable energy usage by 2030 and before, and once again topped the list of data center companies.

Since then, GDS has published ESG reports for three consecutive years. It is the first domestic data center company that promises to simultaneously operate carbon neutral and use 100% renewable energy by 2030.

The company is committed to promoting the improvement of renewable energy usage and data center operation efficiency through measures such as implementing diversified energy substitution strategies and strengthening large-scale application of innovative technologies. Combining green data center construction, active participation in green power transactions, and strengthening value chain collaboration, etc., the company continuously reduces carbon emissions throughout the data center.

In 2023, the proportion of renewable energy used by WDS increased to 38%, with a total usage of 1,809 GWh. A total of 35 data centers achieved 100% green power coverage, 41 data centers obtained green data center certification, and the optimal average annual PUE of data centers reached 1.15. At the same time, the company continues to deepen the R&D and application of technologies such as fuel cells, energy storage, liquid cooling, and multi-component fluorine pump systems to strengthen green design and operation.
