ADR (American Depositary Receipt) Japanese stocks, converted at a rate of 1 dollar to 157.50 yen compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Yucho Bank <7182>, Terumo <4543>, Disco <6146>, Tokyo Electron <8035>, Advantest <6857>, Renesas <6723>, Japan Post <6178>, and others fell, with overall selling dominance. The Chicago Nikkei 225 futures clearing price was 39,660 yen, a decrease of 380 yen compared to the Osaka daytime price.
U.S. stock markets continued to decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,287.53, down 377.49 points, while the Nasdaq closed at 17,726.94, down 144.28 points. Due to concerns about the disruption to the world economy caused by a system failure, the market fell after opening. There were also selling pressures from investors closing their positions ahead of next week's high-tech company earnings, further weighing down the market. As the system was restored, the market stopped declining, but remained weak throughout the day and closed.
On the New York foreign exchange market on the 19th, the dollar-yen rose to 157.70 yen, but then fell back to 157.27 yen, ending at 157.48 yen. Although the dollar was buoyed by demand for safe-haven assets and buying due to rising long-term interest rates, its upside was limited by persistent speculation of a rate cut. The euro-dollar fell from 1.0894 dollars to 1.0876 dollars, closing at 1.0882 dollars.
On the 19th, NY crude oil futures for September fell (NYMEX crude oil September contract closing price: 78.64, down 2.66).
