Looking at Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TNDM ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Tandem Diabetes Care

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Dick Allen, for US$258k worth of shares, at about US$51.68 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$43.66. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Dick Allen.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 0.8% of Tandem Diabetes Care shares, worth about US$23m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Tandem Diabetes Care Insider Transactions Indicate?

An insider sold Tandem Diabetes Care shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Zooming out, the longer term picture doesn't give us much comfort. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. So we'd only buy after careful consideration.
