On Tuesday, South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company announced that it has reached its first commercial electric bus supply agreement in Japan.

The company said it signed a letter of intent to sell five electric buses with Iwasaki Group, a transportation and tourism operator headquartered in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, last Thursday in Tokyo.

Under the agreement, Hyundai plans to provide five electric city buses by the first quarter of next year. This is the first time Hyundai has supplied electric buses to Japan.

Hyundai's electric buses will operate on Yakushima Island in southern Japan, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The electric bus is a medium-sized, low-floor model equipped with a 145 kWh battery and a high-efficiency electric motor.
