The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. Investors in Rianlon Corporation (SZSE:300596) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 39%. That's disappointing when you consider the market declined 15%. Notably, shareholders had a tough run over the longer term, too, with a drop of 36% in the last three years. Even worse, it's down 15% in about a month, which isn't fun at all.

With the stock having lost 6.7% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Unfortunately Rianlon reported an EPS drop of 21% for the last year. The share price decline of 39% is actually more than the EPS drop. This suggests the EPS fall has made some shareholders more nervous about the business.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 15% in the twelve months, Rianlon shareholders did even worse, losing 39% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for Rianlon that you should be aware of before investing here.
