One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. For example, the American Realty Investors, Inc. (NYSE:ARL) share price is up 36% in the last three years, clearly besting the market return of around 14% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 2.9% in the last year.

The past week has proven to be lucrative for American Realty Investors investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.

While American Realty Investors made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last 3 years American Realty Investors saw its revenue grow at 29% per year. That's much better than most loss-making companies. The share price rise of 11% per year throughout that time is nice to see, and given the revenue growth, that gain seems somewhat justified. So now might be the perfect time to put American Realty Investors on your radar. A window of opportunity may reveal itself with time, if the business can trend to profitability.

American Realty Investors shareholders are up 2.9% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 5% a year, over half a decade) look better. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for American Realty Investors you should be aware of.
