Those holding Able View Global Inc. (NASDAQ:ABLV) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 89% share price decline over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 19x, you may still consider Able View Global as a highly attractive investment with its 5.3x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Able View Global has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this respectable earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Able View Global's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Able View Global would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 18% last year. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 96% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 13% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.
In light of this, it's understandable that Able View Global's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Able View Global's P/E
Able View Global's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Able View Global maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
