苹果AI翻车?写作工具难应付脏话,对敏感话题“罢工”

Apple's AI fails? Writing tools struggle to handle dirty language and refuse to discuss sensitive topics.

Netizens revealed that Apple Intelligence's writing tool rewrites dirty content, but the result is unbearable to look at word for word. If the requested content includes words related to drugs, murder, or homicide, the system will warn the user that the tool is not designed for this type of content, and even if replaced with other words, the warning may not disappear.

Last week, Apple's personal intelligent system, Apple Intelligence, made its debut on Apple devices such as iPhone through the developer beta version of iOS 18.1. One of the first batch of features of iPhone artificial intelligence (AI)-writing tool Writing Tools has sparked controversy just a week after its debut and has been criticized by netizens. On the product structure side, the operating income of products worth 10-30 billion yuan is 401/1288/60 million yuan respectively.

According to Apple, Writing Tools allows users to rewrite, proofread and summarize text in almost any scenario, including Mail, Notes, Pages documents and various third-party Apps. Some netizens have demonstrated that the tool can modify words with a harsh tone in conversations to make them sound more gentle.

However, some media have pointed out that when users are dealing with certain topics, the tool may present users with AI-generated suggestions of lower quality.

In particular, when users need to rearrange text, they can almost call Apple Intelligence anywhere in the new iOS system. However, if they attempt to rewrite a paragraph or sentence that contains dirty words, they will see a system warning informing them that 'Writing Tools is not designed to handle this type of content'. The system warns users through this text that the quality of the content rewritten by AI may be different from the original.

On social media X, a user posted a short video showing an attempt to rewrite the text message 'Let's fxxx daddy' using Apple Intelligence. The AI-generated result was 'unbearable' and an exact word-for-word translation, changing the wording to have sex with dad.

Under this post, some netizens commented that the rewritten content generated by AI is 'toxic' and some said it was embarrassing. Others sarcastically wondered if Apple added some street AI to mock Siri. Some netizens imagined how they would feel if they really sent out the rewritten text.

Rewriting dirty words is not the only situation that will trigger a warning from the iOS system. If a user mentions drugs, murder or homicide, similar warnings will appear, as shown in the screenshots displayed in the media.

Similarly, when users use untrained words or phrases, Apple Intelligence also displays warning suggestions. On one occasion, when using the AI writing tool, a media person replaced the word 'sh***y' with 'crappy' to try to make the warning disappear, but the suggested warning returned by the AI tool was exactly the same as before the replacement. The media has asked Apple for more information on which topics the collaborative tool has not been trained in.

Some media believe that Apple may avoid any controversy by prohibiting AI from processing certain words, topics and tones when rewriting sentences. In any case, the writing tool driven by Apple Intelligence is not suitable for generating new content from scratch. Apple hopes to warn users when AI is reviewing source text.

In addition to the controversial Writing Tools, Apple also released some AI features last week, including: Siri's new feature, which allows Siri to switch between text and voice and can answer thousands of questions about how to use Apple devices such as iPhone; the new feature of Mail, which has an emergency email area and provides full-text abstracts of emails; the new feature of Photos, which allows users to search for photos in everyday language, and AI can be used to create videos based on text input, as well as transcribe voice into text and generate summaries.

Many AI features introduced by Apple at the Global Developers Conference (WWDC) in June this year have yet to go live. Apple said they will launch them next year, including the image creation function Image Playground, the scene creation app Genmoji, the notification function Priority Notifications, and a more powerful Siri with screen perception. At present, only registered developers can experience the iPhone AI. If Apple launches more AI features next year and opens them up to a wider user base, it may face more criticism.
