The number of repossessed mortgaged properties in the United Kingdom increased by 8% in the second quarter.

The high interest rates have squeezed homeowners, leading to an 8% increase in the number of repossessed mortgaged properties in the UK in the second quarter of 2024. Data compiled by the industry organization, UK Finance, shows that about 980 mortgaged properties were repossessed between March to June this year. This number is higher than the 910 properties repossessed in the previous quarter and is more than 30% higher than the same period last year.

According to a financial report from the UK, the increase in the number of repossessed properties is largely due to the court's increased ability to handle cases of historical arrears. Due to a large number of fixed-rate mortgage loans that have not yet matured since the interest rate rose, and regulations introduced since the financial crisis aimed at ensuring that borrowers can afford the loan under the situation of interest rate rising, the total amount of delinquent loans is under control.

UK landlords, who are already facing stricter regulations, are facing even more challenges. The number of buy-to-let mortgaged properties repossessed has increased even more rapidly, rising to 710 properties between March and June, a 13% increase from the previous quarter and more than 50% higher than the same period last year.

Last year, the UK formed a record number of buy-to-let companies as landlords tried to cut costs by transforming leases into corporate structures.
