TNB's Crucial Role Green Economy & EV Industry Development

Business Today ·  Aug 13 05:16

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) plays a pivotal role in ensuring a consistent energy supply across Malaysia and in driving the nation towards a high-value green economy and the advancement of the electric vehicle (EV) industry. TNB's capacity for substantial capital investments is essential in this endeavour.

TNB's efforts align with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) introduced by the MADANI government, helping to facilitate Malaysia's renewable energy (RE) commitments. The company is tasked with installing new infrastructure, investing in advanced systems, and upgrading and replacing aging assets to meet the increasing demands of both existing and new electricity consumers.

To support these goals, TNB is planning for higher investment allocations during the Fourth Regulatory Period (RP4) from 2025 to 2027, compared to the RM21 billion earmarked for the Third Regulatory Period (RP3) between 2022 and 2024. The scale of these capital investments hinges on the ongoing discussions with the Energy Commission regarding the IBR regulations for RP4, which are crucial to ensuring the efficient development of Malaysia's energy sector.

As the operator of the national grid in Peninsular Malaysia, TNB is a critical enabler of the NETR. Its track record suggests that the company will continue to prioritise effective infrastructure investments to strengthen the grid, ensuring it is robust enough to support the integration of clean energy.

Balancing Fair Returns in the Fourth Regulatory Period

It is equally important to secure fair returns during RP4, particularly as this period is structured to support the government's NETR ambitions. Fair returns will enable TNB to make strategic investments that not only propel the national energy transition and stimulate economic growth but also enhance customer experiences through innovative solutions.

With these returns, TNB is well-positioned to manage the costs of electricity generation while delivering world-class services to Malaysians. In essence, TNB will continue its mission to contribute to Malaysia's socioeconomic progress and ensure that shareholders receive appropriate returns.

Moreover, the public should recognise that for nearly 75 years, TNB has maintained a safe and reliable energy supply across Malaysia, operating 24 hours a day. As a crucial service provider in the electricity sector, TNB has successfully fulfilled its responsibility to over 33 million people, thanks to its strategic investments.

In its role as a key driver of Malaysia's sustainability goals, TNB is also at the forefront of modernising the country's energy infrastructure, supporting Malaysia's path towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
