Zhejiang Renzhi Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002629) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But the last month did very little to improve the 51% share price decline over the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in China's Energy Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2x, you may consider Zhejiang Renzhi as a stock probably not worth researching with its 3.9x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Zhejiang Renzhi Has Been Performing

Zhejiang Renzhi has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this respectable revenue growth will be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Zhejiang Renzhi, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Zhejiang Renzhi?

Zhejiang Renzhi's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 20%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 73% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

It's interesting to note that the rest of the industry is similarly expected to grow by 18% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Zhejiang Renzhi's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends would weigh down the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From Zhejiang Renzhi's P/S?

The large bounce in Zhejiang Renzhi's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our look into Zhejiang Renzhi has shown that it currently trades on a higher than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is only in line with the wider industry forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
