AeroVironment's (NASDAQ:AVAV) Five-year Earnings Growth Trails the Splendid Shareholder Returns

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 15 11:04

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For instance, the price of AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVAV) stock is up an impressive 247% over the last five years. Better yet, the share price has risen 10% in the last week. But this could be related to the buoyant market which is up about 4.5% in a week.

Since it's been a strong week for AeroVironment shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the five years of share price growth, AeroVironment moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that AeroVironment shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 96% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 28% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand AeroVironment better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that AeroVironment is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
