Further Weakness as China Greatwall Technology Group (SZSE:000066) Drops 3.1% This Week, Taking Three-year Losses to 49%

Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term China Greatwall Technology Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000066) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 49% in three years, versus a market decline of about 28%. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 31% in the last year. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 17% in the last 90 days. But this could be related to the weak market, which is down 13% in the same period.

After losing 3.1% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Because China Greatwall Technology Group made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last three years China Greatwall Technology Group saw its revenue shrink by 13% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The annual decline of 14% per year in that period has clearly disappointed holders. That makes sense given the lack of either profits or revenue growth. Of course, sentiment could become too negative, and the company may actually be making progress to profitability.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that China Greatwall Technology Group shareholders are down 31% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 17%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 4% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
