Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On LiqTech International, Inc. (NASDAQ:LIQT) Even After 29% Share Price Boost

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 18 09:15

LiqTech International, Inc. (NASDAQ:LIQT) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 29% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 32% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, LiqTech International's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Machinery industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.4x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How LiqTech International Has Been Performing

LiqTech International certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as LiqTech International's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 8.5% last year. Revenue has also lifted 13% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 25% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 0.9%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that LiqTech International is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What Does LiqTech International's P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite LiqTech International's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

LiqTech International's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
