According to Omdia's new market analysis, it is expected that by 2031, the shipment of smart phone hybrid oxide low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPO) OLED display panels will increase to 0.52 billion pieces.

According to Omdia's new market analysis, it is expected that by 2031, the shipment of smart phone hybrid oxide low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPO) OLED display panels will increase to 0.52 billion pieces. During this period, the market share of LTPO OLED display panels in the shipment of smart phone OLED display panels is expected to reach 52.0%, surpassing low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) OLED.

Compared with 2023, the shipment of smart phone OLED display panels in 2024 is expected to increase by about 28.8%, exceeding 0.8 billion pieces. It is expected to exceed 1 billion pieces annually by 2031. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of LTPS OLED display panel shipment is expected to be about -1.0%, while the compound annual growth rate of LTPO OLED display panel shipment is expected to be about 8.0%.

Jerry Kang, a display research manager responsible for OLED and emerging display panel market analysis at Omdia, said: "Compared with LTPS OLED, LTPO OLED has lower leakage current, which can run at low power consumption below 30Hz refresh rate. Therefore, more and more smart phone brands are using LTPO OLED display panels in their products to reduce device power consumption."

Before 2020, almost all smart phone OLED display panels used LTPS driving circuits. Until 2020, Samsung Electronics first applied LTPO driving circuits to OLED display panels of its Galaxy Note20 Ultra. After that, various flagship smart phones such as Apple iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max (2021), Google Pixel 7 Pro (2022), Motorola Razr (2023) and Huawei Mate X5 (2024) have successively adopted LTPO OLED display panels. In addition, LTPO OLED is gradually expanding from smart phones to smart watches and tablet computers. In order to meet the specific needs of different OLED products, panel manufacturers are developing various types of LTPO driving circuits.

Jerry Kang pointed out: "As generative AI-related functions are increasingly integrated into smart phones, efficient power management of mobile devices becomes crucial. It is expected that smart phone brands will continue to seek higher OLED display panel brightness and resolution, requiring performance improvement without significantly increasing power consumption."

Omdia predicts that panel manufacturers will produce small and medium-sized OLED display panels (6th generation and below) with LTPO driving circuits on most new investment production lines, and will transform a large part of the existing LTPS OLED display panel production lines to produce LTPO OLED display panels. When expanding the capacity of large-size OLED display panels (7th generation and above) for products such as tablet computers and laptops, the advantages of LTPO and oxide driving circuits in terms of performance, production efficiency, and investment cost will be highlighted, which will intensify competition in the next three to four years.
