Insiders At Benchmark Electronics Sold US$1.3m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 19 08:36

Benchmark Electronics, Inc. (NYSE:BHE) shareholders may have reason to be concerned, as several insiders sold their shares over the past year. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Benchmark Electronics

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Jeffrey McCreary, for US$395k worth of shares, at about US$39.49 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$42.35). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 21% of Jeffrey McCreary's holding.

Does Benchmark Electronics Boast High Insider Ownership?

Insiders own 2.4% of Benchmark Electronics shares, worth about US$37m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
