August 19, 2024 - Shares of mpox-related Drug and Vaccine Developers rise on continued strength in early trading on Monday, $Virax Biolabs (VRAX.US)$  up over 155%, $Applied DNA Sciences (APDN.US)$ up nearly 114% and $GeoVax Labs (GOVX.US)$ up more than 52%.

Last Wednesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared that the mpox outbreak once again constituted a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). This is the second time relating to mpox since July 2022 that the WHO has issued such a highest-level alert. Caused by an Orthopoxvirus, mpox was first detected in humans in 1970, in the DRC. The disease is considered endemic to countries in Central and West Africa.

The number of suspected or confirmed mpox cases reported in Africa this year has already exceeded the total case count from last year. Currently, the mpox outbreak has extended beyond Africa, reaching Europe and Asia, with confirmed cases reported in Sweden and Pakistan.
