In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But every investor is virtually certain to have both over-performing and under-performing stocks. So we wouldn't blame long term Geo-Jade Petroleum Corporation (SHSE:600759) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 26% over a half decade. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 10% in the last 90 days. However, one could argue that the price has been influenced by the general market, which is down 13% in the same timeframe.
With the stock having lost 4.5% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

During five years of share price growth, Geo-Jade Petroleum moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.
In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 1.8% a year in the five year period. So it seems one might have to take closer look at the fundamentals to understand why the share price languishes. After all, there may be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
While it's certainly disappointing to see that Geo-Jade Petroleum shares lost 12% throughout the year, that wasn't as bad as the market loss of 15%. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it's worse than the annualised loss of 5% over the last half decade. While some investors do well specializing in buying companies that are struggling (but nonetheless undervalued), don't forget that Buffett said that 'turnarounds seldom turn'. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Geo-Jade Petroleum is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is potentially serious...
