The U.S. stock market declined. The Dow Jones fell 177.71 points to 40,712.78, and the Nasdaq closed at 17,619.36, down 299.63 points.

There was no surprise in the weekly jobless claims, and the rapid deterioration in the labor market subsided, leading to an increase in trading after the opening. The number of existing home sales exceeded expectations, leading to a rise in long-term interest rates and a shift to selling, especially in the high-tech sector. Subsequently, caution grew due to profit-taking sales in anticipation of Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Chair Powell's speech, resulting in an expansion of the decline in the market towards the end. By sector, banks rose, while automobiles and auto parts declined. Peloton Interactive (PTON), which operates a home fitness business, successfully implemented a business restructuring plan, exceeding revenue and profit estimates for the second quarter, and saw an increase.

Zoom (ZM), a provider of online conferencing platforms, continued to rise after upgrading its performance outlook following strong sales of new products in its quarterly earnings. Footwear maker Crocs (CROX) rose on expectations of increased sales from collaborations with popular actors under its brand umbrella. Conversely, Urban Outfitters (URBN), a casual apparel retailer, declined due to lower than expected same-store sales in its quarterly results. Williams-Sonoma (WSM), which sells cooking utensils and furniture, fell after its quarterly earnings report due to a downward revision of its full-year outlook.

Intuit (INTU), a software maker, announced its earnings after the close of trading. Its adjusted earnings per share exceeded expectations, and an increased dividend was well received in extended hours trading. Ross Stores (ROST), which operates inexpensive apparel and home decor brand stores, also rose due to favorable sentiment towards its earnings report.
