ADR (American Depositary Receipt) Japanese stocks, compared to TOPIX (converted at 1 dollar = 146.26 yen), Yucho Bank <7182>, Renesas <6723>, Disco <6146>, Tokyo Electron <8035>, Advantest <6857>, Nidec <6594>, Toyota Industries <6201>, etc. are falling, with overall selling dominance. The settlement value of Chicago Nikkei 225 futures compared to Osaka daytime decreased by 180 yen to 38,050 yen.

The US stock market declined. The Dow Jones fell 177.71 points to 40,712.78, and the NASDAQ closed at 17,619.36, down 299.63 points. Weekly jobless claims did not pose a surprise, and concerns about rapid deterioration in the labor market receded, causing an increase after the market opened. Existing home sales also exceeded expectations and long-term interest rates rose, leading to selling mainly in the high-tech sector. Subsequently, selling intensified due to profit-taking ahead of a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, and the market widened its decline towards the end.

In the New York foreign exchange market on the 22nd, the dollar-yen exchange rate rose from 145.80 yen to 146.53 yen and closed at 146.31 yen. The number of new weekly initial jobless claims in the US remained at the expected level, easing concerns about the rapid deceleration of the labor market. Additionally, the preliminary August report for the Service PMI and July existing home sales exceeded expectations, leading to a rise in long-term interest rates and strengthening demand for the dollar. The euro to dollar exchange rate fell from 1.1143 dollars to 1.1098 dollars and closed at 1.1112 dollars. The preliminary August consumer confidence index for the Eurozone unexpectedly worsened, leading to a stronger selling of the euro on speculation of additional rate cuts at the September meeting of the European Central Bank (ECB).
