アンモニア燃料タグボート「魁」が完成

The ammonia-fueled tugboat 'Sakigake' is completed.

Nippon Yusen ·  Aug 22 11:00

The world's first ammonia-fueled commercial ship is engaged in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay.

Our company and IHI Engine Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as 'IHI Engine') have jointly conducted research and development, with the cooperation of the Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association, on the ammonia-fueled tugboat 'Sakigake' (hereinafter referred to as 'the ship'), which was completed on August 23. It is the world's first commercial ammonia-fueled ship (as of August 23, 24, according to our company's investigation) to be utilized commercially. In the future, it will be operated by our group's Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Co., Ltd. for tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay, while conducting a 3-month verification voyage.
The ship was developed as part of the 'Development of Ammonia-fueled Domestic Engine-equipped Ships' project, which was awarded through the Green Innovation Fund (GI Fund) project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in October 2021. The predecessor, the LNG-fueled tugboat 'Sakigake,' was completed in August 15 as Japan's first LNG-fueled ship at that time. After engaging in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay for approximately 8 years, it underwent conversion from an LNG-fueled ship to an ammonia-fueled ship at our group's Keihin Dock Co., Ltd. Oppama Factory in October 23. During the conversion, the main engine and other components were replaced with ammonia-fueled specifications, and sea trials using ammonia fuel were conducted, leading to today's completion. In hopes that the ship will continue to play a pioneering role as an ammonia-fueled ship, just as it did as an LNG-fueled ship, it has inherited the name 'Sakigake' from its predecessor.

As part of the 'Development of Ammonia-fueled Domestic Engine-equipped Ships' project, for which we have also received support through the public offering of NEDO's GI Fund project, we are conducting research and development with Japan Engine Corporation, Japan Shipyard Co., Ltd., IHI Engine Co., Ltd., and the Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association on ammonia-fueled ammonia transportation ships, aiming for completion in November 26.
Our group will continue to utilize the knowledge gained through the research and development of the ship to contribute to the decarbonization of the marine transportation industry through the popularization and expansion of ammonia-fueled ships.

The NYK Group announced its mid-term management plan "Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 - A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing -" on March 10, 2023. Based on the corporate philosophy of "Bringing value to life," we will promote a growth strategy centered on ESG, which is the core of the new vision for 2030, "Co-create the necessary value for the future by deepening our core businesses and growing new ones beyond the framework of comprehensive logistics companies."
In addition, we are promoting our ESG brand, "NYK GREEN EARTH," which aims to create new value for low-carbon and decarbonized society through green businesses such as the shift to next-generation fuels, and this effort is also part of that initiative.
