At the closing bell on the 23rd, the number of rising stocks in the Nikkei average constituents was 175, the number of falling stocks was 50, and the number of unchanged stocks was 0.
On the 22nd, the U.S. stock market fell. The Dow average closed at 40,712.78, down 177.71 dollars (-0.43%), the Nasdaq closed at 17,619.36, down 299.63 points (-1.67%), and the S&P 500 closed at 5,570.64, down 50.21 points (-0.89%). The weekly jobless claims did not surprise, the rapid deterioration concerns of the labor market retreated, and the market rose after the opening. Existing home sales exceeded expectations, leading to a rise in long-term interest rates, resulting in selling centered around high-tech. Subsequently, cautionary selling also increased ahead of the speech by Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Chairman Powell, and the market widened its decline towards the end.
Although US stocks fell, the Tokyo market took a cautious stance and started firmly. BOJ Governor Ueda stated during the closed meeting that the financial markets continue to be in an unstable situation and that we will continue to watch its movements with great vigilance. He also explained that the basic stance of adjusting the degree of monetary easing will not change, as long as it becomes clear that the economic and price outlook is becoming more certain as we expect. While showing consideration to the market, the exchange rate progressed to a high of 145.20 yen to the dollar, leading to a strong yen and a weak dollar. Although the Nikkei average showed signs of falling into the negative territory due to the yen's strength, in the afternoon, Governor Ueda's explanation that there was no difference from Vice-Governor Uchida, gave a sense of reassurance and the progress of the strong yen halted. The Nikkei average turned around and ended the trading day.
The closing Nikkei average was 38,364.27 yen, up 153.26 yen (+0.40%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Prime Market was 1.3 billion 17.2 million shares. The trading value was 3 trillion 400.8 billion yen. Among the industry sectors, other financing business, precision instruments, construction, securities and commodity futures trading, and machinery increased, while only the wholesale trade, marine transportation, electric appliances, and information and communications sectors declined. The number of rising stocks on the Tokyo Prime Market accounted for 57%, while the number of falling stocks accounted for 38%.
