Manulife Investment Management shares equity analysis and investment insights in its natural capital, TCFD, and SRI reports.

PR Newswire ·  Aug 23 13:00

Toronto August 24, 2024 / PR Newswire / - Manulife Investment Management (Manulife IM), the world's largest natural capital manager, managing over $16 billion in forest and agricultural asset management, recently released three reports detailing how to integrate significant climate and nature-related financial investments into asset management and portfolio construction capabilities. If market participants are interested, they can refer to Manulife IM's reports on "Sustainable Development of Natural Capital", the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) report, and the report on "Sustainable Development and Responsible Investment" (SRI) for insights into sustainable investment and an in-depth understanding of the risks and opportunities of various investments in public and private markets.

The report emphasizes Manulife IM's commitment to providing strong long-term investment performance, the importance of natural capital to human health, and the opportunities that forest and agricultural assets bring to investment portfolios and the planet. For example, in its climate and natural capital investment solutions, Manulife IM provides strategies for investors to seize opportunities in forest investments. This involves purposefully increasing forest carbon storage through enhanced management practices to create highly credible carbon credits.

Paul Lorentz, President and CEO of Manulife IM, said: "We are pleased to share these reports with market participants and believe that climate-related risks and other sustainable development factors can significantly impact long-term financial value and ultimately affect our clients' investment goals. We are committed to considering all financial material risks, including sustainable development factors, throughout the entire investment process. This is because our primary objective is to enhance investment returns on behalf of our clients."

In Manulife IM's latest report on "Sustainable Development of Natural Capital", it emphasizes the importance of natural capital to institutional investment portfolios, the world's dependence on these assets, and how these investments create value beyond the physical products they produce. Key points include:

  • Manulife IM's forest investment assets have planted over 50 million seedlings. These seedlings can produce enough wood to build over 100,000 houses, fiber wood to produce approximately 2.2 million tons of paper, and biomass to generate a year's worth of electricity for 1,500 American households.
  • Manulife IM integrates sustainable practices with agricultural product portfolios, continuing to focus on producing more food with a smaller carbon footprint. During 2023, 100% of client assets report the use of at least one renewable material, with 78% of properties using four or more renewable materials.
  • The company's five nature goals progress report aligns with the commitment to biodiversity financial management, which will be fulfilled by 2025. These goals include collaboration and knowledge sharing to improve assessment methods, integrating biodiversity into ESG policies, assessing investment impact on biodiversity, setting science-based goals to enhance biodiversity impact, and publishing annual reports to measure and evaluate progress in achieving biodiversity goals.

Brian Kernohan, Managing Director of Manulife Investment Management, said: "Natural capital is not just a concept but has intrinsic value in supporting the global economy and becoming a measurable and profitable reality. We believe that nature brings true economic and social value to everything and is currently undervalued and mispriced assets."

The latest TCFD report outlines how Manulife IM incorporates climate-related risks and opportunities into investment decisions through proper governance, strategies, risk management, as well as indicators and metrics.

The key points of the TCFD report include:

  • 90% of Manulife IM's global real estate stock portfolio has obtained green building certifications, such as LEED certification, ENERGY STAR certification, or BOMA BEST.
  • Manulife IM can remove approximately 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through forest and farm management, calculated on a five-year rolling average basis.
  • Manulife IM strives to increase the number of sustainable investment choices for customers, as well as a variety of sustainable investment options.

Manulife IM's latest SRI report provides an in-depth understanding of the company's approach to sustainable investing, including governance, management data, the scorecard for responsible investment principles (PRI), and other sustainable development milestones and achievements.

The key points of this year's SRI report include:

  • Publishing the first natural report based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), outlining the company's approach to managing nature-related risks and opportunities in its forestry and agriculture businesses.
  • For the sixth consecutive year, our company has received a 5-star rating from GRESB.
  • As part of our sustainable investment strategy, our company has formalized private equity and credit platforms, including the establishment of short-term priorities and long-term commitments.
  • Internally, we have established a customer-oriented exclusion framework.
  • Our company has published a water quality statement, formally recognizing water as fundamentally important for human health, livelihoods, ecosystems, the global economy, and future asset management.

Mr. Kernohan's conclusion: "When we are in this dynamic field, our reports strive to provide comprehensive insights and assist us in promoting positive changes and long-term sustainable development through our investment strategy. We are committed to enhancing our reporting to ensure that all stakeholders have a clear understanding of our work in managing climate impact and risk exposure, as well as our efforts to enhance long-term value creation."
