Nvidia plans to announce Blackwell's “new architecture details” on Hot Chips 2024 next week.
From August 25 to 27, Pacific time, the annual top chip event, Hot Chips, will be held at the Stanford University Memorial Hall in the US.
Nvidia said in its latest blog that a presentation on the 26th will focus on Blackwell's architectural details and demonstrate how to run a generative AI model on Blackwell.
According to reports, the lecture will be hosted by Nvidia Architects Ajay Tirumala and Raymond Wong, and will mainly introduce how these technologies work together to improve accelerated computing performance and energy efficiency.
According to Nvidia, the Blackwell architecture is the ultimate solution for general-purpose computing full-stack matrices and consists of multiple Nvidia chips, including Blackwell GPUs, Grace CPUs, BlueField data processing units, ConnectX network interface cards, NVLink switches, Spectrum Ethernet switches, and Quantum InfiniBand switches.
Another focus of the lecture was the Nvidia GB200 NVL72 multi-node liquid cooling system. It was explained that the system is equipped with 72 Blackwell GPUs and 36 Grace CPUs, and supports NVLink interconnect technology, which can facilitate GPU communication and achieve greater throughput and lower latency inference.
Additionally, Tirumala and Wong will introduce the upcoming Quasar Quantization System (Quasar Quantization System). The system brings together algorithm innovations, Nvidia software libraries and tools, and Blackwell's second-generation Transformer engine. The presentation will focus on how the system uses LLMs (Big Language Models) and visual artificial intelligence.
Considering that Nvidia previously announced a delay in mass production of the Blackwell series chips, Citi predicted in a research report released on the 23rd that Nvidia will launch alternative solutions during the Hot Chips conference, such as B200A on the customized MGX system using NVL8 before the GB200 NVL72/36*2 is mass-produced.
It is worth noting that after Hot Chips 2024 ends the US stock market the next day, Nvidia will also announce the results report for the second quarter of 2024.
Citi believes that any new news before next week's Q2 earnings call will help investors set reasonable growth expectations for the Blackwell platform.
The report shows that based on Nvidia's projected price-earnings ratio for 2025 (lower than the 3-year and 5-year average), a target price of $150 was set for the company, and there is still 15.95% upside compared to its closing price on Friday.
The report also pointed out that if the adoption of the new series of chips is slower than expected, it may cause sales in data centers and gaming businesses to decline, posing a downside risk to stock prices.
