Summary of the start of the afternoon session

The afternoon Nikkei average started slightly lower from the morning closing (38,199.52 yen) at 38,181.39 yen, down 107.23 yen from the previous day. During lunchtime, the Nikkei 225 futures traded in the range of 38,130-38,250 yen. The dollar-yen pair has been at around 1 dollar = 144.30-40 yen, showing a slight depreciation of the yen and a higher dollar level since around 9 am. In the Asian markets, the Shanghai Composite Index is trading in the negative territory, down about 0.2%, while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong started slightly higher but turned lower to about 0.9% down.

The Tokyo market in the afternoon session started with some selling pressure compared to the morning close. Some investors are holding back from actively buying as they await the earnings announcement of the U.S. Nvidia after the regular trading session in the U.S. stock market. On the other hand, the reassuring development of the lower price trend in the morning Nikkei average and the stabilization in the foreign exchange market after the yen strengthened to around 143.60 yen to the dollar earlier seem to provide a sense of security in the stock market.
