①Meta plans to launch a lightweight mixed reality headset weighing only 110 grams in 2027; ②The product, codenamed Puffin, focuses on solving the existing product's heaviness and is expected to be released in 2027; ③The product will achieve lightweighting through external battery and computing hardware, and will adopt gesture and eye tracking technology.

According to media reports on Wednesday, August 28th,$Meta Platforms (META.US)$They plan to launch a lightweight mixed reality head-mounted display in 2027.

The development code name of this product is Puffin, and its biggest feature is that it is a lightweight device, focusing on solving the existing product's heaviness, and is expected to be released in 2027.

Lighter product line

Just less than a week ago, news broke that Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg and CTO Andrew Bosworth had canceled the high-end headset with the codename La Jolla, which was originally planned to compete with Apple's Vision Pro in 2027.

At the time, some Meta employees claimed that after a product roadmap review meeting last week, the company's management suddenly instructed the staff of the Reality Labs department to stop developing this high-end mixed reality headset.

And according to this latest report on Wednesday, during the same product review meeting, they approved another headset with the codename Puffin, expected to be released in 2027.

Reportedly, Puffin looks more like a pair of glasses, weighing less than 110 grams, and is equipped with thin lenses and a passthrough camera. Its lightweight design is achieved by externalizing the battery and computing hardware. Meta envisions this external device to be small enough to fit directly into the user's pocket.

In addition, Puffin is not equipped with a handheld controller, but uses more advanced gesture and eye tracking technology.

If the report is accurate, it means that Puffin will be significantly lighter than any other full-featured headsets to date. In comparison, the weight of Meta Quest 3 (without straps and facial interface) is about 400 grams, and the weight of Quest 3 (with straps and facial interface) is about 515 grams. The weight of the battery is about 70 grams.

There have also been reports that Meta plans to launch two versions of Quest 4 in 2026, which may mean that Puffin will be a completely new product line, possibly focusing on media capabilities and productivity enhancements, and directly competing with Apple's Vision Pro at a lower price.
