As Electric Connector Technology (SZSE:300679) Advances 3.3% This Past Week, Investors May Now Be Noticing the Company's Three-year Earnings Growth

It can certainly be frustrating when a stock does not perform as hoped. But when the market is down, you're bound to have some losers. The Electric Connector Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300679) is down 18% over three years, but the total shareholder return is -16% once you include the dividend. And that total return actually beats the market decline of 24%. It's down 20% in about a quarter. However, one could argue that the price has been influenced by the general market, which is down 15% in the same timeframe.

While the last three years has been tough for Electric Connector Technology shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Although the share price is down over three years, Electric Connector Technology actually managed to grow EPS by 13% per year in that time. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

With a rather small yield of just 1.1% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 3.4% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating Electric Connector Technology further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Although it hurts that Electric Connector Technology returned a loss of 7.6% in the last twelve months, the broader market was actually worse, returning a loss of 11%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 4%, each year, over five years. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
