Improved Earnings Required Before Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) Shares Find Their Feet

ハーレーダビッドソン株式会社(NYSE:HOG)の株価が回復する前に、収益の改善が必要です

Simply Wall St ·  08/31 08:53

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.3x Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) may be sending very bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 34x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Harley-Davidson as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. If not, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Harley-Davidson's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Harley-Davidson's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 8.7%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 61% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the twelve analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 2.8% each year over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Harley-Davidson's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Harley-Davidson's P/E?

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Harley-Davidson's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Before you settle on your opinion, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Harley-Davidson (2 are a bit concerning!) that you should be aware of.
