As of the closing time of the second day, the number of rising stocks in the Nikkei average constituent stocks was 132, the number of falling stocks was 89, and the number of unchanged stocks was 4.
The U.S. stock market rose on August 30. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41,563.08, up 228.03 points (+0.55%) from the previous day. The Nasdaq closed at 17,713.63, up 197.20 points (+1.13%), and the S&P 500 closed at 5,648.40, up 56.44 points (+1.01%). The market initially rose on expectations of gradual interest rate cuts, similar to the anticipated level of the July PCE deflator (core), but temporarily turned down due to the rise in long-term interest rates. However, it was bought again due to end-of-month buying and improvements in the August University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index and August Chicago Purchasing Managers' Index, leading to an increase in the stock market in the final stages. The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a new all-time high for consecutive days and closed. Based on the rise in U.S. stocks and the weak yen in the foreign exchange market, the Tokyo market opened with a buying preference. The Nikkei average started in the 39,000 yen range but failed to continue the buying trend. Since the U.S. stock market will be closed tonight, there was no active buying, and the Nikkei average narrowed its gains. In the afternoon, the market remained at the level of the previous day's closing price, but it ended with the support of the 75-day moving average of 38,646 yen.
The Nikkei average at the closing time was 38,700.87, up 53.12 yen (+0.14%) from the previous trading day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.54 million shares, with a trading value of 3.3216 trillion yen. In terms of industries, nonferrous metals, banking, other financing business, insurance, and securities and commodity futures trading industries rose, while pharmaceutical, marine transportation, land transportation, real estate, and food industry declined. The number of rising stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 38%, while the number of falling stocks was 58%.
The top contributors to the rise were Advantest and TDK, which together pushed the Nikkei average up by about 66 yen. The top performing stocks in the Nikkei average constituent stocks were IHI, up 5.52%, and Creston, up 5.43%.
On the other hand, the top contributors to the fall were Chugai Pharmaceutical and Tokyo Electron, which pushed the Nikkei average down by about 71 yen.
