Tesla China sold 86,697 vehicles in August, including those sold in China and those exported to overseas markets, up 16.97 percent from July and up 3.02 percent year-on-year.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw a significant increase in China-made vehicles sold last month.

Tesla China sold 86,697 vehicles in August, including those sold in China and those exported from China to overseas markets, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

That's up 16.97 percent from 74,117 in July and up 3.02 percent from 84,159 in the same period last year.

In the January-August period, Tesla China sold 587,437 vehicles, down 6.01 percent year-on-year.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.

Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.

Figures for Tesla's August sales in China and vehicles exported from its Shanghai factory are not yet available.

China's wholesale sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs), including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), were estimated at 1.05 million units in August, up 32 percent year-on-year and 11 percent from July, according to CPCA.

This means that Tesla China contributed about 8.3 percent of China's wholesale NEV sales in August.

Tesla only produces BEVs, while some Chinese NEV makers, including BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) and Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI), produce both PHEVs and BEVs.

Tesla's main Chinese peers reported mixed August delivery numbers yesterday.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) delivered 20,176 vehicles in August, the fourth consecutive month above the 20,000 mark. That's up 4.38 percent year-on-year, though down 1.57 percent from July.

Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) delivered 48,122 vehicles in August, down 5.64 percent from July's 51,000 but up 37.83 percent from 34,914 a year ago.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) delivered 14,036 vehicles in August, up 26 percent from 11,145 in July and up 2.53 percent from 13,690 a year ago.

Zeekr (NYSE: ZK) delivered 18,015 vehicles in August, up 15 percent from 15,655 in July and up 46.43 percent from 12,303 a year ago.

BYD Aug sales breakdown: Song 76,793 units, Qin 70,457
