The Zhitong Finance App learned that China Coal Energy (01898) fell nearly 4% in early trading. As of press release, it was down 3.26% to HK$9.21, with a turnover of HK$82.1352 million.

According to a research report released by Citigroup, China Coal Energy's net profit for the first half of the year was 9.8 billion yuan, down 17.3% year on year, accounting for 56% of Citibank's annual forecast and 50% of the agency's forecast. This means that profit for the second quarter of this year was 4.8 billion yuan, up 3% year on year and 3% month on month. The month-on-month decline in net profit in the second quarter of this year was mainly due to a drop in gross profit in tons of self-produced commercial coal, a drop in coal prices, and a rise in unit costs.

Goldman Sachs, on the other hand, said that China Coal Energy's mid-term profit fell slightly short of the bank's and market expectations, and the weak coal business was partially offset by improvements in the coal chemical business. The bank lowered its profit forecast for the company from this year to 2026 by 9% to 10%, reflecting lower coal prices. According to the bank, the company's interim dividend was RMB 22.1 per share, with a dividend payout ratio of 27%, compared to last year's unpaid interim dividend and 36% annual dividend. The bank continues to see room for an increase in dividend payout ratios.
