Even After Rising 39% This Past Week, Anhui Guofeng New Materials (SZSE:000859) Shareholders Are Still Down 40% Over the Past Three Years

Anhui Guofeng New Materials Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000859) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 39% in the last week. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 40% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

The recent uptick of 39% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the three years that the share price declined, Anhui Guofeng New Materials' earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Different Perspective

The total return of 19% received by Anhui Guofeng New Materials shareholders over the last year isn't far from the market return of -20%. Unfortunately, last year's performance is a deterioration of an already poor long term track record, given the loss of 3% per year over the last five years. Weak performance over the long term usually destroys market confidence in a stock, but bargain hunters may want to take a closer look for signs of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
