In the ADR (American Depositary Receipt) Japanese stocks, Yucho Bank <7182>, Renesas <6723>, Hitachi <6501>, Nidec <6594>, SoftBank Group <9984>, Tokyo Electron <8035>, Sony <6758>, and others fell, with selling prevailing overall. The settlement value of Chicago Nikkei 225 futures was 36,725 yen, down 275 yen from Osaka's daytime trading, when converted at a rate of 1 dollar to 143.64 yen in comparison to the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The U.S. stock market was mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,974.97, up 38.04 points, while the Nasdaq ended trading at 17,084.30, down 52.00 points. The semiconductor sector's decline was a cause for concern, leading to a drop in prices after the opening bell. However, strong buying emerged temporarily as speculation intensified about a substantial interest rate cut due to a larger-than-expected decrease in July's JOLTS job openings. Nonetheless, caution ahead of the release of employment statistics and comments by Atlanta Fed President Bostic, who mentioned the risk of labor market disruptions and called for an early rate cut in an essay, along with the Federal Reserve's Beige Book, which indicated a modest slowdown in the economy, placed limits on upward pressure and resulted in a mixed closing.
In the New York foreign exchange market on the 4th, the dollar-yen rate fell from 145.20 yen to 143.71 yen and closed at 143.76 yen. The observation of a slowdown in the labor market intensified due to a greater-than-expected decline in July's JOLTS job openings, which reached the lowest level since January 2021, further promoting expectations of an interest rate cut and accelerating the sell-off of the dollar amid declining long-term interest rates. The Federal Reserve's Beige Book, which was published along with economic reports from the regional banks, also indicated signs of a gradual economic slowdown, adding to pressure on the dollar. The euro-dollar rate rose from 1.1040 dollars to 1.1095 dollars and closed at 1.1083 dollars.
NYMEX crude oil futures for October continued to fall (NYMEX crude oil October futures closing price: $69.20, down $1.14).
