Those Who Invested in IDEXX Laboratories (NASDAQ:IDXX) Five Years Ago Are up 78%

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 7 09:15

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. For example, the IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDXX) share price is 78% higher than it was five years ago, which is more than the market average. The 1.4% share price rise over the last year is decent, but not great.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, IDEXX Laboratories managed to grow its earnings per share at 17% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 12% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective

IDEXX Laboratories provided a TSR of 1.4% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 12% over five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market.
