In the New York foreign exchange market on the 6th, the dollar-yen rose to 144.01 yen, then fell to 141.78 yen, and closed at 142.30 yen. The strengthening of the dollar was driven by the rise in the unemployment rate and the expansion of average hourly earnings in the August employment statistics, leading to increased dollar buying due to the rise in long-term interest rates. However, with the slowdown in job growth in the non-farm sector and downward revisions to employment figures for the past two months, the dollar turned to selling as interest rates declined. As the situation did not worsen as much as feared, speculation about a substantial interest rate cut did not intensify, causing the dollar to temporarily stop its decline. However, Federal Reserve Board Governor Waller's statement that a substantial interest rate cut is not ruled out accelerated the selling of the dollar. The euro-dollar rose to 1.1155 dollars, then fell to 1.1066 dollars, and closed at 1.1086 dollars. The weak German GDP for the April-June quarter pushed down the euro after reaching highs.
On the 6th, NY crude oil futures for October delivery declined (NYMEX crude oil October delivery closing price: 67.67, down 1.48).
