Tesla sold 63,456 vehicles in China in August, the highest of the year, up 37.27 percent from July, though down 1.91 percent year-on-year.
Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) deliveries in China rebounded to the highest of the year last month, though still shy of all-time high levels.
Tesla China sold 86,697 vehicles in August, including 23,241 for export, data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.
That means the US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 63,456 vehicles in China in August, a new high for the year, CnEVPost calculations show.
That's down 1.91 percent from 64,694 vehicles in the same month last year, but up 37.27 percent from 46,227 in July.
In the January-August period, Tesla sold 388,000 vehicles in China, a decrease of 0.57 percent from the same period last year.
Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.
Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.
Tesla China's overall sales including exports were up 3.02 percent last month from 84,159 a year earlier, and up 16.97 percent from 74,117 vehicles in July.
Exports from Tesla's Shanghai plant were up 19.4 percent in August from 19,465 a year earlier, but down 16.67 percent from 27,890 in July.
Of Tesla China's August sales including exports, Model Y was 56,309 units, contributing 64.95 percent of sales. That was a 13.79 percent decrease from 65,316 in the same month last year and a 36 percent increase from 41,405 in July.
Model 3 sales, including exports, amounted to 30,388 units, contributing 35.05 percent of Tesla China's August sales. That's up 61.27 percent from 18,843 a year ago, but down 7.1 percent from 32,712 in July.
Retail sales figures for the Model 3 and Model Y in China in August are not yet available.
Industry-wide, China's retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) reached a record 1,027,000 units in August, up 43.2 percent from a year ago and up 17 percent from July.
Retail sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China totaled 583,000 units in August, accounting for 56.8 percent of all NEV retail sales. That was up 18.5 percent year-on-year and up 20.8 percent from July.
PHEVs accounted for 444,000 retail sales in August, contributing 43.2 percent of all NEV retail sales, which was up 96.9 percent year-on-year and up 12.2 percent from July.
That means Tesla's share of China's NEV market was 6.18 percent in August, up from 5.27 percent in July but down from 9.04 percent a year earlier, CnEVPost calculations show.
In China's BEV market, Tesla's share was 10.88 percent in August, up from 9.59 percent in July but down from 13.18 percent a year earlier.
