Shenzhen Infinova (SZSE:002528) Adds CN¥372m to Market Cap in the Past 7 Days, Though Investors From a Year Ago Are Still Down 73%

Simply Wall St ·  18:55

This week we saw the Shenzhen Infinova Limited (SZSE:002528) share price climb by 14%. But that is meagre solace when you consider how the price has plummeted over the last year. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 73% in the last year. Arguably, the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last year, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

Shenzhen Infinova wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Shenzhen Infinova's revenue didn't grow at all in the last year. In fact, it fell 25%. That's not what investors generally want to see. The share price fall of 73% in a year tells the story. Holders should not lose the lesson: loss making companies should grow revenue. But markets do over-react, so there opportunity for investors who are willing to take the time to dig deeper and understand the business.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 18% in the twelve months, Shenzhen Infinova shareholders did even worse, losing 73%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 8% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Shenzhen Infinova (including 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) .
