McDonald's is reportedly launching a series of digital order sites that offer cashier-free checkout options.
According to media reports on Wednesday (September 11), citing unnamed sources, these digital ordering sites will be launched at a small number of the fast food giant's restaurants, and will be able to collect cash and provide change without the participation of cashiers.
McDonald's already uses self-service kiosks at most of its locations, but diners who don't pay with a card still have to wait in line to be checked out by the cashier. According to the report, under the new model, human workers will be freed up to handle other tasks, such as handling takeout pickup orders.
According to the report, McDonald's confirmed the new design options and said that the screens behind its counter usually show the full menu, but under the new model, these screens will highlight selected dishes and encourage diners to order at kiosks or mobile apps.
Customers who would rather order at the counter can still choose to request a full printed menu, the report said.
“These changes enable franchisees to meet our customers' growing demand for digital choices while improving speed and accuracy,” McDonald's said.
