Viavi Solutions (NASDAQ:VIAV) Adds US$62m to Market Cap in the Past 7 Days, Though Investors From Three Years Ago Are Still Down 48%

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 13 06:09

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Viavi Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ:VIAV) share price has gained 13% in the last three months. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. After all, the share price is down 48% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

The recent uptick of 3.5% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the three years that the share price declined, Viavi Solutions' earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Extraordinary items contributed to this situation. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

A Different Perspective

Viavi Solutions shareholders are down 15% for the year, but the market itself is up 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 7% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Viavi Solutions better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Viavi Solutions .
