Viewing insider transactions for Darling Ingredients Inc.'s (NYSE:DAR ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net sellers. This means that a larger number of shares were sold by insiders in relation to shares purchased.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Darling Ingredients

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chairman & CEO, Randall Stuewe, sold US$1.5m worth of shares at a price of US$42.84 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$35.21. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Randall Stuewe.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 34.12k shares worth US$1.5m. On the other hand they divested 34.96k shares, for US$1.5m. Does Darling Ingredients Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 1.1% of Darling Ingredients shares, worth about US$62m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Darling Ingredients Insiders?

The recent insider purchases are heartening. But we can't say the same for the transactions over the last 12 months. We don't take much heart from transactions by Darling Ingredients insiders over the last year. But they own a reasonable amount of the company, and there was some buying recently. Overall they seem reasonably aligned. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
