Earnings Working Against Entergy Corporation's (NYSE:ETR) Share Price

收益對安特吉公司(紐交所: ETR)股價產生了負面影響

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 19x, you may consider Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) as an attractive investment with its 15.4x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Entergy has been doing quite well of late. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

NYSE:ETR Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry September 17th 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think Entergy's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Entergy's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 27%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 35% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 0.8% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 10% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Entergy's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Entergy's P/E

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Entergy maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Entergy (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.

Of course, you might also be able to find a better stock than Entergy. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
