In the American depositary receipt (ADR) of Japanese stocks, compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (converted at 1 dollar to 142.62 yen), Advantest <6857>, Disco <6146>, Tokyo Electron <8035>, Japan Post <6178>, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group <8306>, Mizuho Financial Group <8411>, Renesas <6723>, Terumo <4543>, Marubeni <8002>, etc., rose, and buying was dominant overall. The settlement price of Chicago Nikkei 225 futures was 640 yen higher than Osaka daytime trading at 37,530 yen.

The U.S. stock market rebounded significantly. The Dow Jones was up 522.09 points to 42,025.19, while the Nasdaq closed at 18,013.98, up 440.68 points. Weekly initial jobless claims hit a four-month low, easing concerns about a slowdown in the labor market, leading to gains after the opening. Furthermore, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC)’s significant interest rate cut was successful in keeping the economy from declining too sharply, contributing to expectations of a soft landing, resulting in further gains. The high-tech sector also provided strong support to the market, expanding gains towards the end of the session.

In the New York foreign exchange market on the 19th, the dollar-yen rate rose to 143.76 yen, then fell to 142.54 yen, and closed at 142.61 yen. Last week's U.S. initial jobless claims decreased more than expected, easing concerns about a slowdown in the labor market. Also, the September Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index rose more than expected, reducing pessimism about economic deterioration. With rising interest rates, dollar buying became predominant. Subsequently, as U.S. existing home sales in August decreased more than expected from July, dollar buying subdued. The Euro-Dollar rate fell to 1.1117 dollars, then rose to 1.1167 dollars, closing at 1.1163 dollars.
