Shareholders Should Be Pleased With Jiugui Liquor Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:000799) Price

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 20, 2024 12:20

Jiugui Liquor Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:000799) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 49.7x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 26x and even P/E's below 16x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Jiugui Liquor as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Jiugui Liquor's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Jiugui Liquor's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 67%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 70% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 59% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 19% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Jiugui Liquor's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Jiugui Liquor's P/E?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Jiugui Liquor's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
