Cautious Investors Not Rewarding DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:603233) Performance Completely

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 25 02:52

When close to half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 28x, you may consider DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603233) as an attractive investment with its 16.3x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 27% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 19% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 28% each year during the coming three years according to the ten analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 19% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group's P/E

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that DaShenLin Pharmaceutical Group currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
