Strong Week for Yang GuangLtd (SZSE:000608) Shareholders Doesn't Alleviate Pain of Five-year Loss

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 26 18:45

Yang Guang Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:000608) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 48% in the last month. But that is little comfort to those holding over the last half decade, sitting on a big loss. In fact, the share price has declined rather badly, down some 60% in that time. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. We'd err towards caution given the long term under-performance.

On a more encouraging note the company has added CN¥382m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Yang GuangLtd has made a profit in the past. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

Revenue is actually up 3.5% over the time period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 14% in the twelve months, Yang GuangLtd shareholders did even worse, losing 28%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 10% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Yang GuangLtd (2 are significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
