Strong Week for Metro Land (SHSE:600683) Shareholders Doesn't Alleviate Pain of Three-year Loss

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 26 21:12

This month, we saw the Metro Land Corporation Ltd. (SHSE:600683) up an impressive 36%. If you look at the last three years, the stock price is down. But that's not so bad when you consider its market is down 26%.

On a more encouraging note the company has added CN¥511m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the three years that the share price declined, Metro Land's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Metro Land shareholders are down 25% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 14%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Metro Land better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Metro Land .
